Roads, rivers, walls and terrain

The Build mode tools that shape the land around your buildings. Open Build mode with the toolbox, then pick a tool from the bar along the bottom. A hint above the bar explains each tool as you use it.

Shapes: curve, straight, ellipse

Roads, walls and fills share three drawing shapes:

For curve and straight, press Enter or choose Finish when you're done. Ctrl+Z removes the last point while you're drawing.

Roads

Pick main, path or trail, a shape, and a color (Auto uses your map theme's road color). Start or end a road near another road's end and they snap together.

Characters walking around town follow your roads and bridges.

Rivers

Click to add points along the river's course, then press Enter or choose Finish. Ctrl+scroll changes the width (on touch, use − and +).

Walls

Pick a shape, then set the thickness (T) and height (H) with − and +, and choose a color. On desktop, Shift+scroll changes thickness and Ctrl+scroll changes height while you draw.

Fill

Fills paint areas of the map: lakes, fields, plazas. Pick curve, straight, ellipse, or hex (click whole hexes, then Finish fills them), and a color.

Stamps

Stamp opens an icon picker: trees, rocks, crates, wells and many more. Click to place one, or drag to paint a trail of them. Scroll to rotate (in 2D) and Shift+scroll to resize, or use − and + for size. Choose a fill color, or No fill.

Eraser

Click a stamp, road, river or wall to delete it. The Eraser can remove a building too, after you confirm: the building is archived along with the people who live there, and they keep their memories.

Editing what you've drawn

In Build mode, click a road, river, wall or fill to edit it:

Undo and redo

Undo and Redo are at the start of the tool bar (and on the Command Deck on desktop), or use Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Ctrl+Y). Your undo history clears when you leave Build mode. See Keyboard shortcuts.
