Write what your character says and does in ordinary sentences, the way you'd write a story:
I set a coin on the counter and lean in. "One room for the night, please."
Putting spoken words in quotes makes it clear what you say out loud. First person ("I lean in") and third person
("Kara leans in") both work. Actions don't need asterisks or brackets.
Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a new line.
Wrap text in *asterisks* for bold or _underscores_ for italics.
Messages can be up to 4,000 characters.
Edit and re-roll (Hero)
Hover one of your own messages to see two buttons:
✎ Edit: change what you said and rerun the conversation from that point. Save & rerun (or Enter) to go,
Cancel (or Esc) to back out.
↻ Re-roll: get a different reply to the same message.
Either way, everything after that message is replaced.
Some limits:
Only messages from the current conversation that haven't yet been turned into memories can be edited.
Anything that actually happened in a replaced reply stays done: money spent, items traded, quest steps completed.
There's one reply at a time, not a set of alternatives to swipe through.
The portrait menu
Open a character's menu with the pencil on their portrait (desktop) or a long-press (touch):
Add to party or Remove from party (see Party members)
Dialogue speed (1x, 2x, 3x) in Atlas → Settings changes how quickly lines play out once a reply arrives. It
doesn't make replies arrive faster.
Film grain in Atlas → Settings adds a subtle texture to the conversation view.
Narration sits in the middle of the screen. The person you're talking to stands on the left, and others on the
right.
Expressions
When a character has an expression sheet, their face changes with each line. On desktop, hover an earlier line to see
the face they made. See Portraits, portrait states and expressions.
Leaving
Leave (or Esc) ends the conversation. On mobile, use the door button.
