How characters remember, how you can shape what they remember, and the Journal where it all shows up.
When you leave a conversation, each character who took part forms one memory of it, written from their own point of view. You need to have exchanged at least a message and a reply.
That same moment also updates their disposition toward you, a few private notes on their state of mind, and whether they'd like to see you again.
Characters gather memories in other ways too:
If a memory couldn't be written (say you closed the tab mid-conversation), it catches up the next time you talk to that character.
Nothing fades on its own. Memories last until you delete them, or delete the world.
Each time you send a message, a character brings to mind:
On the Hero plan, characters recall more of each. See Plans and limits.
A character always sees the latest stretch of your conversation word for word. As a conversation grows, the earlier part is condensed into a running summary that keeps the key moments, so very long scenes stay coherent.
If you come back to someone later the same day, you pick up where you left off. Later than that, they work from their memories.
When characters share a building, they talk, and they pass on what they know. A story can be passed on twice: from the person who saw it to someone else, and from them to one more ("Heard from Mara that…"), but no further.
A character who hasn't met you may already have heard something about you, and will treat you accordingly.
Private memories never spread. Some intimate moments are made private automatically.
Open the Journal (the open-book icon) → Characters → a character. You can:
You can pin one memory per character, or three with Hero.
The same page shows their disposition, their goal, fear and secret, and buttons to Move to current location or Send home.
Each memory is tagged with where it came from:
| Tag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| player | A conversation with you |
| gossip | Heard from someone else, or a world event |
| npc | A scene you watched but weren't part of |
| reaction | Their private response to news that touched them |
| injected | Added by you |
At the top of a character's memories is {name}'s history with you: their own summary of your relationship. It's rewritten automatically every few conversations. You can edit it any time, and your version is used straight away, but the next rewrite replaces it.
